This is a show, that under normal conditions, would have flown well below my radar. Just for the fact that my best friend Axel was visiting from down under (Argentina), and he is an avid jazz listener, was I able to even know about this show. As for Esperanza Spaulding, I had my first taste of her music from her winning the best new artist at the Grammy Awards this year. I was so impressed that she beat the boy wonder, Justin Bieber, that I immediately downloaded her latest CD (sorry, I don’t have Bieber fever). I must admit, I’d never heard of Mike Stern, but my Argentine brother gave me the scoop. In the 70s he was the guitarist for Blood, Sweat And Tears, and really broke out in the scene when he was featured on the 1981 live album We Want Miles.

Clark Gayton’s Exploration in DUB was a classic set of DUB and Rock Steady Reggae. The tuba was an interesting alternative to the electric bass. NuBlu is pretty small, so the sound of the tuba filled the room. The dread on sax was laying down some hypnotic melodies. The drummer was steady and groovy. I would definitely recommend seeing this group, especially at the ultimately hip NuBlu.
